You’ve just arrived at your new home, the boxes are stacked high, and your energy is running low. What now? Whether it’s your first move or your fifth, that first night in a new place can feel overwhelming. The last thing you want to do is dig through boxes at midnight trying to find your toothbrush or a clean pair of socks.
This guide will help you plan ahead and make that first evening feel a little more like home—and a lot less chaotic.
Think of this as your “home base” box. It should travel with you, not in the back of a moving truck. You want it nearby, easy to open, and filled with the things you’ll actually need within the first 24 hours.
✔ Bed sheets or sleeping bag
✔ Pillow and blanket
✔ Comfortable clothes or pajamas
✔ Phone charger
✔ Sound machine or fan (if you’re used to one)
✔ Toilet paper
✔ Towels and washcloths
✔ Toothbrush, toothpaste, and soap
✔ Shower curtain & rings (if needed)
✔ Quick-cleaning supplies (multi-surface wipes, hand soap)
✔ Paper plates, bowls, cups, and plastic utensils
✔ Bottled water, Gatorade, or your favorite drinks
✔ Easy snacks and meals (think: protein bars, fruit, frozen pizza, instant noodles)
✔ Trash bags
✔ Dish soap and a sponge
✔ Scissors or a box cutter
✔ Flashlight or nightlight
✔ Medications
✔ Basic first-aid supplies
✔ A few tools (screwdriver, hammer, tape measure)
It’s not just about the practical stuff. Consider packing something comforting too—a favorite candle, a framed photo, or even your go-to tea or coffee setup. Moving is a big transition, but little familiar things can make a big difference.
And if you’re prepping for your next move, I’m always happy to share more tips (and maybe even help you find your next home).
